Standardise project materials: edit properties, assign to elements, check naming against the BEP, and round-trip through Excel keyed on UniqueId so renaming never breaks the link.
A project's material list bloats over years and many hands — names drift from the convention, functionally identical duplicates scatter across the model, and the Excel sheet used to track it all clings to the one thing most likely to change: the Name.
The BEP requires materials named to the project code, but Revit warns nobody when someone types a different name by hand — the mismatch only surfaces at QA, or when the reviewer sends the package back.
Concrete, BT, Bê tông — every modeler names it their own way, and Revit treats them as three separate materials. Merging them by hand, element by element, is a job nobody wants.
The Excel sheet exported for the subcontractor to cross-check matches by material Name only. Rename it in Revit — even just a typo fix — and the matching Excel row drifts loose, forcing a manual row-by-row re-match.
Revit's native Material Browser only lets you edit Class, Keynote or description one material at a time, in its own dialog. A few hundred materials means repeating that click-through hundreds of times.
Free add-ins on the market usually do one job: Autodesk's own Duplicated Materials Add-on only removes exact-name duplicates, and modplus Material Manager only renames and swaps materials on elements. Ideate StyleManager can rename and merge, but it's a general cleanup tool for line styles, patterns and filters too — not material-specific — and costs $795–5,500.
