Join and unjoin geometry from category-pair rules you define: presets stored locally, exported and imported as JSON to share with the team, and only ever run when you press the button.
Revit auto-joins geometry by its own hidden rules, with no way to declare in advance which category pairs should join and which shouldn't. Every project means re-figuring it out by hand with Join/Unjoin, and there's no way to save that logic for the next project or hand it to a colleague.
Alpha BIM's Auto Join add-in only handles four fixed category pairs — structural/architectural floor, structural/architectural wall, structural/architectural column, and structural framing — and there's no way to add a rule for any other category, like MEP, furniture or steel.
The native Join Geometry command only accepts two elements per click — applying one rule to hundreds of column-beam-floor pairs on a single floor means repeating the select-and-click for every pair.
Because it's entirely manual, the decision of which category joins which lives only in the operator's head — the next project, or a new team member, has to work it out again from scratch.
Certain modeling actions in Revit trigger background auto-joins under the software's own logic, changing geometry without anyone issuing a deliberate command — very hard to trace back when auditing the model later.
Alpha BIM's "Auto Join" add-in on the Autodesk App Store (free trial) joins four hard-coded category pairs and lets you save or load rules to disk — but it's locked to that fixed list, with no way to extend it to other categories. ZFENIX's AutoJoin lets you define a rule for any category pair you choose, set join or unjoin per rule, and export/import the whole rule set as JSON so the team shares one configuration instead of every machine setting it up from scratch — and it never runs in the background, only when you press the button:
