Section by Grid.

Generate sections along grid lines: pick the grids, get the sections, named to the Vietnamese standard with depth and crop taken from the model extent.

01 · THE PROBLEM

Cutting a section along every grid line in Revit is repetitive by design: pick the Section tool, drag along the exact axis, adjust the crop to the building extent, then type a name to the Vietnamese numbering convention. Multiply that by the dozens of grids in a real project and it's the same four steps over and over — miss one grid in the sequence and every section number after it drifts out of order.

3–5 phút/trục

Drawing each section by hand, per grid

Every grid needs the Section tool dragged along the right axis, then the crop re-adjusted to match elevation and model extent — a 40-grid project means 40 passes of the exact same motion.

40 trục → 40 tên

Manual section numbering drifts and duplicates

Sections named to the Vietnamese standard need continuous numbering in grid order; inserting one extra grid midway forces a chain rename of every section after it.

crop lệch nhau

Crop region and depth end up inconsistent

With no automatic reference to the model extent, each drafter eyeballs the crop — published sections end up with inconsistent depth and visible area across disciplines on the same project.

10–15 phút/trục

Re-applying the view template and checking each view

Once created, each section still needs to be opened, given a view template, and checked for graphic overrides — a step that's easy to skip when a deadline is close.

What it does

Dedicated add-ins for this are narrow in scope: Beam Section (JSP Solutions, $25, Revit 2017–2020) auto-generates and names sections with a template applied, but only for structural beam sections — not whole-building sections along grid lines. For grid-based building sections, the common approach is still Revit's native Section tool: drag each grid by hand, fix the crop, type the name. Section by Grid runs that same job across every selected grid in one pass:

Generate sections

  • Pick the grids to cut from the project's grid list
  • Named to the Vietnamese standard with continuous numbering
  • Depth and crop region taken from the model extent
  • Apply a view template at creation time
