Opening For Wall.

Cut wall openings at the exact size of a door, window, curtain wall, or beam — a door sitting off the wall still cuts in the right place thanks to perpendicular projection, while a beam running through the wall gets an opening measured from the real footprint of its section.

01 · THE PROBLEM

When an architectural file is linked into a structural model to drive openings, Revit offers no direct route from a linked door to an opening in the structural wall. The common workaround is to re-place that same door on the structural wall purely to borrow its opening, then live with a pile of door elements sitting in a structural model that never needed them.

Each opening means picking a family, aligning it to the centreline, fixing the sill height, then checking it again — a few dozen doors on one floor eats half a day, and it all restarts whenever the architect revises the layout.

Doors placed only to borrow an opening still show up in schedules, quantities and structural drawings — they have to be filtered out by hand everywhere, and missing one spot corrupts the numbers.

Beams through walls: Revit cuts nothing on its own

When a beam runs through a wall, every opening has to be drawn by hand and lined up with the beam section at the crossing. A skewed beam is worse still: its footprint on the wall face is longer than the beam width and it enters at one spot and leaves at another, so hand-typed numbers almost always come out short or oversized.

What it does

The difference is that the tool never asks the source element to sit on the wall. Doors, windows, and curtain walls: the opening size is projected PERPENDICULARLY onto the nearest parallel centreline within 0.5 m, so the architectural model keeps its own centreline while the structural model still gets the cut in the right place. Beams: the tool finds every wall the beam runs through and measures the real footprint off the beam's own geometry:

Perpendicular projection, no door re-placement

  • Pick doors, windows, or curtain walls straight inside the linked Revit file — clicking a glass panel or a mullion resolves to the parent curtain wall
  • The element centre is projected perpendicularly onto the structural centreline
  • Any wall within 0.5 m and parallel to within 5 degrees qualifies
  • Double and two-leaf walls are cut through in the same pass

Sizes and elevations that match site practice

  • Reads the door Width/Height parameters, instance first then type
  • Falls back to measuring the 3D bounding box for non-standard families
  • Matches the door's real elevation and size on its own host wall, never stretched further
  • Doors and windows share the same rule — a target wall sitting lower or higher than the architectural wall never changes the opening size
  • Curtain walls aren't hosted in another wall, so their size comes straight from their own centreline length plus a true 3D bounding box

  • Pick beams by their Structural Framing category, in the project or in a linked file
  • Finds EVERY wall the beam runs through — one beam cuts several walls in a single run
  • The opening is measured directly off the beam's solid rather than read from b/h parameters — so skewed, sloped, haunched, and rolled-steel beams all come out right
  • Measured at both wall faces and the centreline then unioned, so a skewed beam never comes up short on the far face
  • Beams running along a wall or bearing on top of it are skipped (15-degree crossing threshold) — no accidental cut down the whole wall

  • No configuration window — click the ribbon, pick the elements, done
  • Pick from BOTH the project and the linked file in the same run — Esc skips either source and moves on
  • Positions that already have an opening — or a wall that already has its own door — are skipped, so repeat runs never duplicate
  • The entire run sits in one transaction — a single Ctrl+Z reverts it
