Split columns, walls and beams that span several storeys at the level planes: doors, windows and profiles are preserved, gap offsets are configurable, and sloped elements are handled.
Columns, walls and beams often get modeled spanning several storeys straight off — fast to build, but once the project needs quantities per floor, worksets per floor, or a construction-phase breakdown, each element has to be split back apart exactly at the level plane, without breaking the doors and windows already hosted in the wall.
Split Element can cut columns and walls, but only if you click the exact point at each level's elevation on each element — a building with dozens of storeys and hundreds of spanning columns and walls means repeating that click hundreds of times.
If a hand-picked split point lands too close to a hosted door or window, Revit can cut straight through the opening or orphan the family from its host — the mistake only shows up later, in a 3D view or a door schedule.
Split Element draws its cut plane perpendicular to the active view, not along the element's own sloped axis — for a raked column or beam the cut lands skewed and has to be corrected by hand each time, leaving room for geometry mistakes.
Expansion-joint or fireproofing details between two split segments call for a small gap at the cut — the native Split tool has no such parameter, so each segment has to be nudged apart manually afterward.
Column Splitter on the App Store (free, Revit 2023–2026) only splits vertical columns — by point, level or reference plane, and the listing itself notes it supports vertical columns only. Walls and beams are left to the native Split tool, clicked by eye. Split by Level handles all three element types at once, right at the level plane:
