01 · THE PROBLEM
Fill patterns pile up in a Revit file over years, across families and CAD imports, but Purge Unused skips this category entirely — cleanup still happens by hand, one row at a time, with no way to know for certain which pattern is still referenced by which element. Renaming to the project code convention is the same story: open Additional Settings, double-click, type, hit enter, repeat for every single pattern.

The native Fill Pattern dialog has no way to show which material or filled region a pattern is tied to — pick the wrong one and hit Delete, and Revit removes it immediately, no second prompt, no in-use list standing in the way.

Every CAD link or import turns the drawing's hatches into new Revit patterns named whatever the CAD software assigned them — the same concrete hatch can end up living under half a dozen different names, with nobody merging them back together.

What it does
Revit itself can't clean up fill patterns — Purge Unused skips the category outright. Add-ins like View Filter Manager ML can bulk-rename by adding or stripping a prefix, but they won't tell you where a pattern is actually used; Ideate StyleManager can rename, merge and delete fill patterns along with line styles and filters, but it's a project-wide cleanup suite priced at $795–5,500, not a tool built specifically around fill patterns.
