Coordinate Setup.

Set up the project coordinate system — VN-2000, UTM/WGS 84, or a Transverse Mercator grid you define yourself: enter survey points, place the survey point and site information, and check it against a map canvas inside Revit.

01 · THE PROBLEM

Getting a Revit project onto the surveyed coordinate system is still manual work, whether that is VN-2000 or any UTM zone: convert the coordinates through an outside tool, retype every number into the Location dialog, place the survey point one at a time, and there's no way inside Revit to tell whether any of it matches the real site until someone gets to the field or a coordination meeting exposes the mismatch.

A survey report usually lists dozens of N-E-elevation control points, but Revit only offers Manage > Coordinates > Specify Coordinates at Point one point at a time — open the dialog, type three numbers, close it, move to the next point.

Converting the survey grid to what Revit understands — done by hand, errors go unnoticed

Every survey grid carries its own central meridian, false easting and scale factor — VN-2000 uses 3-degree zones, UTM splits the world into sixty 6-degree zones — while Revit's Location tab only understands WGS84; converting through an outside tool and retyping the numbers leaves plenty of room for a few meters of error to slip through unnoticed until someone checks it against the site.

Rotating True North by eyeballing it

Revit has a Rotate True North command, but it won't calculate the rotation angle from the survey's azimuth data — engineers have to work out the angle themselves, rotate, eyeball whether it looks right, and rotate again if it doesn't.

Survey point set, nothing to check it against a real map

Revit has no map canvas to check the survey point you just placed against the actual site — verifying it means exporting to Google Earth or a separate GIS tool, and the mismatch usually only surfaces at a coordination meeting with the surveyor.

02 · FEATURES

What it does

The common workaround is still converting by hand through an online coordinate converter and retyping every number into Revit's native Location dialog: no bulk-entry grid, no control-point cross-check, no map preview. For VN-2000 specifically there is no App Store add-in at all, since it is a Vietnam-only standard. Coordinate Setup folds that entire process into one window inside Revit, for domestic and international grids alike:

  • A fixed grid-to-map ratio so both stay readable side by side

Pick the coordinate system

  • All ten VN-2000 TM-3 zones, each labelled with its EPSG code and central meridian
  • All sixty UTM/WGS 84 zones, both hemispheres
  • A custom CRS: enter the central meridian, false easting/northing, k0, ellipsoid and seven datum-shift parameters yourself
  • Until a coordinate system is chosen, the map background and control-point check stay disabled — no silent fallback to a default CRS
  • A control-point check: compare grid coordinates against known WGS 84 pairs and report the maximum error and RMSE
